Save Money By Installing Your Own Retractable Awnings

When you decide to install retractable awnings you will discover that not only will they give your more shade and shelter for your patio or deck, they also will cost you a lot less than if you were to construct a permanent structure or enclosure for your outdoor areas. You can save even more money if you go ahead and do the installation yourself.

Once you have purchased the retractable awnings that you want, it is very important that you check out all the different parts that come with your awning. Make sure to take everything out and lay the parts down in front of you and determine what each parts function is.

Next thing you will want to do is to figure out the proper height for installation. In order to do this you should figure out how much pitch it has and just how high you want the rail at the front of the awning. Then add the pitch to the height you want the front rail to be as this will help you figure out the actual height.

Now make a chalk line on the outside of your wall at the height of the awning. Make sure this line is extremely level. You can do this by using a level. You must make sure that the area you will be mounting the awning at is straight.

You should have a stud finder because the next thing you need to do is find where the studs are in the wall so you can determine where you will be installing your awning. If you find it difficult to find them from the outside you may have to find them from the inside of the wall and then put that information on the outside of your wall after. Your awning must be mounted securely to the studs or headers of the wall because if you have any kind of strong winds in your area, the awnings can be blown down if they are not fitted securely.

Now you need to find the center stud and from there drill small holes to the outer edges. This needs to be done about one inch under the line that you drew earlier. You will also have to make another line that will be long and goes vertical from the middle of your center stud. After, you can fill the smaller holes with some silicon.

Now take your brackets that came with the kit and start attaching them along your vertical line. This is where following the instructions that came with the kit becomes very important. Every kit will come with different amounts of brackets because of size so make sure to pay close attention to how they tell you to do this.

After you are done with this you can now install what is called the hood. Again follow the instructions that came with your awning. Once you have done this it will be time to insert the awning bar into the brackets that were installed earlier. You will need to make sure this is securely fastened with the different bolts and washers that are provided.

After you have done all of this you will now be ready to try out your awning by unrolling it. Once you have unrolled it you can further adjust the pitch of the awning according to your own personal taste.

By using retractable awnings you can add a classy and attractive feature to the outside of your home or building and also limit the direct sunlight coming into any room. This can directly save you money by reducing your air conditioning bill.

In addition to the improved appearance, an awning can be used to provide shade outside the building while cutting out glare and minimizing UV exposure. UV light quickly damages any objects that are left in direct exposure to sunlight for a length of time causing the products or equipment to quickly age and become brittle.

There is a spectacular range of retractable awnings on the market and there is definitely a color, style and material for all needs. Special space age materials often go into the manufacture of these awnings and can significantly improve the lifetime of the awning and resulting in little or no maintenance required. Special trim features are also available, allowing you to customise the unit to your particular tastes or requirements.

To protect your awnings from adverse weather conditions like high winds, snow and hail, you can simply fold them away or even take them down. Also, folding or putting them away when they’re not in use to protect them from long term sun damage might be a good idea. Even though they are made from tough materials, they are not indestructible.

Some retractable awnings can easily be adapted for electrical automation. By the clever use of light sensors, rain detectors, timers or even a simple push-button system, you can simplify the task of adjusting them. If you aren’t tempted by the intricacies of an electrical system, a manual mechanical aid can be very useful and just as efficient.

These awnings are generally easy to install and require only a few tools and a little expertise to properly fit them to your building. They are ideal for that weekend DIY project while giving you the additional benefit of the cost saving of not needing a contractor to do this relatively simple installation.
