He had no problem with that and said his strength was sales. He would fill the room with customers, and all I had to do was to deliver the content of a training and use my name in the event. I thought that I had died and gone to heaven. Someone was going to fill the room for me! I hated the sales part.

We eventually moved forward. However, when we approached the time for the event, only five people had signed up, and I was the one that signed them. I began wondering what was going on. My partner got mad and said that I needed to do more of the sales, even though we had agreed that was his part.

We had both fallen guilty of partnering “to be saved.” I wanted to be saved from the pain of sales. My partner wanted to be saved, really, from work, and wanted my name to give him celebrity. The “to be saved” desire didn’t work for either of us. The same theme, although the details are different, has played out over and over with my clients. Sometimes the real goal it is to get out of work, like in my incident.

Another common problem that business owners want to partner up is out of fear of launching their business on their own. They have a deeply imbedded doubt that they can really make it alone, so they want someone to hold their hand and walk them through growing the business.

When a person makes a decision based on fear, it typically doesn’t work out that well for them. When two people come together in business because of their insecurities, they quickly learn that reason is not a solid place to build a relationship or a business.

Other issue I have seen in partnerships ocurr when one person really wants to be the boss and just tell the other person(s) what to do. The boss partner is actually looking for a robotic employee. Again, that typically doesn’t turn out well.
