Different Kinds Of Baseball Collectibles

May 26, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

Do you have a family member whose passion is baseball collectibles? Or are you the type who would give anything to get rare pieces of merchandise that reminds us why America’s Pastime is still so popular?

There are several different types of keepsakes you can acquire to add to your baseball collectibles. An autographed baseball can make many a baseball fan happy just by the sight of it. A ball that was held by an icon has special meaning for those who look up to him.

Another road you can take in adding to a fan’s baseball collectibles is giving them baseball cards. Some fans like to invest in packs of trading cards, while others will appreciate an autographed card of vintage value.

Bobble head dolls became popular in the 1950s, and are now highly prized baseball collectibles. Now, they’re mass-produced, but there are many bobble head dolls that were limited in quantity, making them more valuable.

You could also invest in sports equipment as a form of baseball collectible. Baseball bats signed by the game’s great home run hitters are especially valuable and treasured by hobbyists and collectors around the world.

The above items are all forms of baseball collectibles, but how about looking at the best guides in buying these items? These guides can come in really handy, because every collector needs to get some bang from his or her buck, may it be buying or selling the items – and a means to compare prices from different vendors.

Barry Halper’s Collection of Baseball Memorabilia details the 2,500 plus collectibles that were sold through the famed auction house Sotheby’s. You can even see pictures of some of the most valued baseball collectibles in Mr. Halper’s collection.

The Beckett Almanac of Baseball Cards and Collectibles is another leading resource when it comes to researching about the best prices and finest memorabilia a collector could buy.

Whether you’re a sports collectible minor leaguer or All-Star, these guides are indispensable pieces of literature. And it also helps them determine the value of their own collection so that they don’t inadvertently get rid of something that may turn out to be a rare find and worth far more than the price they originally paid.

There are many options as detailed above that could keep a fan happy and help him or her expand his or her baseball collectibles inventory. If you really love the game, you could get to the point where you can have the luxury of owning more than one of a certain item – and part with the other one, trading it for another item, or selling it for a handsome price.

Tips On Buying The Right Baseball Gear

May 21, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

The gear you need will vary depending on the person almost as widely as the types of gear you’ll find. Before you purchase your first gear item it’s important to know what your team or league will and won’t allow as well as what position you intend to play. In the following article we’ll provide you with some basic principles for purchasing your baseball gear.

The ball is the general object of the game itself. Baseballs don’t often live very long in the world of major league games in which you are likely to go through several dozen of them. It’s always a good idea to have several extras on hand since they can be easily damaged by a hard swing or perhaps lost in a number of ways. You will probably not need your own balls for official practices and games but you’ll want to have some for practicing in your spare time. Your practice balls don’t need to be major league quality but you will want a high quality leather or synthetic type material even for practice.

You’ve probably heard that the catcher has the hardest job of all positions in baseball right? The catcher is most known for his ability to crouch for hours behind home plate as he catches fast balls and attempts to avoid being hit with the bat. Because you just never know when you’re going to get hit with a bat or ball it’s important for the catcher to have chest protection, shin guards and a groin cup for extra protection. You will no doubt want this gear to be the right fit for you since you will wear it for a while.

The pitcher may want to invest in a pitching target to practice on in his spare time. If you have a lack of partners to practice with this can be a helpful tool for improving your aim and technique. One device you might consider is the Rawlings Comeback device which offers you some great fielding practice in addition to your pitching practices. This device is perfect for infield, outfield and pitching positions since it’s angle can be adjusted for fly balls and grounders too. Increase your skill set with the practice you’ll get by owning your own equipment.

If you want to play your best the above information is important to consider when purchasing baseball equipment that’s right for you. As with any sport it may be necessary to experiment with your equipment to find the right fit for you. It might even be necessary for you to have multiple types of gear if you like to play different positions. As you begin looking for baseball gear you can use this information as a guideline for getting the best gear for you.

Why You Should Use The Appropriate Baseball Gear

May 20, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

The gear you use when playing baseball can make a real difference, as with any sport. Each player needs certain types of equipment like the glove to be perfectly suited to them or they won’t be able to play at their best. You will also need a bat that is the right size and weight for your swing and your build. Keep reading to learn some of the important factors you need to consider when getting baseball gear.

Batting helmets don’t make you a better hitter but they do protect you from harm. Many people may underestimate how dangerous baseball can be but players have been killed by speeding pitches. Getting hit by a ball can be very serious, so always wear a helmet when batting. While this is mandatory if you play in any leagues, you should also keep this in mind when practicing. Look for a high quality helmet that fits well and won’t interfere with your vision.

You need to take very good care of your baseball glove which is one of your main accessories. Using an oil or conditioner will help keep your glove clean and protected from the elements. It’s best to use a product specifically designed for conditioning gloves because using something that is too harsh can wear down the leather. Your glove should be stored in a cool, dry place when you’re not using it. Avoid exposure to heat and dampness which aren’t good for leather. You need to inspect the laces on your glove to make sure they’re not broken or brittle a they will need to be replaced occasionally.

There are practical reasons baseball players wear caps with visors in addition to them being part of the uniform. When it’s raining but not hard enough to call off the game, a well fitted cap can keep your head dry. It can be easier to keep track of the ball because the visor will help keep the sun out of your eyes. While baseball cap is a basic part of your uniform and it isn’t the most important or costly gear, it can help you focus on your game.

Baseball is a very traditional game and many things have remained constant but some types of gear like the bats have changed slightly over the years. A glove that fits your hand as well as clothing and protective gear that fits properly will always be essential parts of the game. The above are just some of the important pieces of equipment you’ll need that can help you focus on the game.

Tune-Up Tips For Spring Bicycle Riding

May 6, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

It is now time for us to dust our bikes and get ready to ride if we have put them away for the winter. When you bring a bike out of storage, it is necessary to give it a mini tune-up. Chain, derailleur components, brakes, and wheels are the four areas that you need to pay special attention to.

1. Chain Consider switching to a wax-based lubricant if you have been using an oil-based product. However, an oil-based lubricant needs to be applied less frequently, but in every other way, wax-based is superior and that is its only advantage. For example, unlike wax which sheds abrasives, oil collects trail dust and other things abrasive to the chain. White Lightning is a recommended wax-based lube.

If oil-based chain lube is what you have been using, then you should remove the chain and clean it with a solvent to degrease it before adding fresh lubricant whether you want to switch to wax or not. Using a solvent to degrease the chain needs to be done once a year at a minimum, depending on your typical riding conditions.

Derailleur Components Lubricate the pivot points using a good petroleum-based lube. Try using Tri-Flow. Next, lubricate and adjust the derailleur cables, which might have stretched over the winter. Adjustments are necessary so that shifting is crisp.

3. Brakes The cables should be once again lubricated. Depending on how dusty the expected typical riding conditions will be , you can use either petroleum or wax-based lube. Adjust the cables, which might also have stretched over the winter.

You need to determine if the pads hit the rims evenly and if there is plenty of rubber so don’t forget to check them. If fluid-actuated disc brakes are what you are using, then check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

d) Brakes To check for true, spin the wheel slowly. As for the wheel, it should not wobble at all. If it wobbles a little bit and you have the tools and skill, you can make minor adjustments using a spoke wrench. If there is substantial wobbling, however, then you need to take the wheel to a shop and have a professional true the wheel.

Checking the tire pressure is a must since it is bound to be low after a winter of storage. Inflate to the manufacturers recommendations that are stamped on the tire.

Giving the bike a once-over is what you need to do now. Is the seat adjustment still a good fit? Is there excess play or tightness in the bearings of the wheels, crank, pedals, and headset? You should also check the suspension joints for full-suspension bikes.

You will be able to determine whether it is time for a major tune-up from this once-over. What this could do is range from a few adjustments to cleaning and/or replacement of some parts. Opinions differ on how often a major tune-up is needed. It depends on how much you ride, and how much maintenance you perform yourself.

Every now and then, whether you do the major tune-up yourself or take the bike to a reputable bicycle shop, the following maintenance is necessary for optimal performance and safety: truing the wheels, making overall adjustments, such as to the derailleur and brakes, repacking bearings and adjusting wheel axles, headset, crankset and pedals, and replacing cables.

British And American History Of Horse Racing

April 26, 2012 · Posted in Hobbies · Comment

Racing horses has probably been around since man first started to watch horses as they ran from one place to another. The first civilization to domesticate horses where in Central Asia about 4500 BC and racing horses was a favorite sport in which upper class and kings were able to participate. During the first Olympics in Greece horses were raced. This began the history of horse racing all over the world.

Modern horse racing began after the crusades when the 12th century knights brought Arabian horses back to England with them. Arabians were larger and swifter than the English horse. They returned with stallions that were bred with the English Horse. This made the offspring very strong and able to endure long and hard riding with speed and grace.

A very important race to the history of racing happened in 1752 in a little town of Doneraile in County Cork, Ireland. Here a race was organized from the steeple Buttevant Church to the steeple of St. Marys. This is where the term of steeple chasing began. The first formal steeplechase was in 1839 called the Grand National taking place in Liverpool. Another great steeplechase takes place annually during the weekend of Ester in County Meath, Ireland and is called the Irish Grand National.

Professional horse racing began in the nineteenth century. Owners started to train their horses in hopes of making them run faster and smoother. If you won a race you received money from the bets made on the horse. Owners who trained their horse made more money than those that did not train and those well paid owners met in Newmarket to form the Jockey Club in 1750. This club controlled all functions of horse racing in Britain and still does today.

This authority wrote down all regulations and strictly enforced them. The Jockey club would set up races and regulated the size and shape of tracks or courses. It set up the races that comprise the English Triple Crown and ran them well. They were in charge of all wagering on horses. They began to document the family tree of a horse and determined what horses could race and those that could not.

Horses that have a documented family tree or pedigree are considered Thoroughbreds. These horses have been inbred and can have their linage tracked down to one of three Stallions brought over from Arabia and bred with other horses. Racing of thoroughbreds came over to America in 1665 and a track was built on Long Island. Racing horses became very popular and by 1890 there were over 300 race tracks in America.

This was a problem because America did not have the Jockey Club to regulate the tracks and therefore they were run by crooked individuals only interested in getting rich without care of the sport. In 1894 the American Jockey Club was formed. They had their hands full because horse racing in America had become something deplorable instead of a grand day out for the wealthy as it was in England. Those that frequented American race tracks were considered to be undesirables.

During this era of corrupt activity in American tracks the 1908 Kentucky Derby introduced pari-mutuel wagering. This type of wagering was legalized and it began to turn the tide for American horse racing. Tracks soon began to open under the new rules and regulations and grew from the 35 tracks that were still in operation. By the nineteen seventies racing once again began to be a decent sporting activity.

In America and Britain there are several different forms of horse racing. The Steeplechase is very popular in both countries. An American variety of racing called harness racing has many tracks that were specifically built to specifications for that type of racing. Thoroughbred racing is probably the most popular and consists of a flat, oval track from about three fourths of a mile to two miles in length. Both countries have many thoroughbred racing venues from which to choose. Both countries have regulations and rules that make racing and betting acceptable. They also regulate horses that can race and continue to keep a running record of all pedigrees of race horses.

Great Golf Advice You Should Check Out

April 26, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

There is no need to pay for expensive lessons from a golf pro to get the most out of your golf game. Just a few practical tips from the article below will bring an improvement to your score and a feeling of achievement every time you are out on the course. Get started now to bring out your best effort.

Resist the line of thinking that every sand shot warrants the use of a sand wedge. Every shot from the bunker is unique, and you must take into account the distance to the hole, your lie, the lip, and the quality of the sand before you choose the right club for the shot.

A great golf tip pertaining to the swing is to always limit how high you raise your arms during your follow-through motion. By keeping your hands low, you can keep the ball’s trajectory low as well. Though you can achieve similar effects by using a different club or by bringing the ball further back in the striking stance, this method results in greater overall predictability.

Before you swing the golf club “” take time to line up! Aligning yourself for your shot is easy enough to do when you focus on a high and low object to set your line. Focus on something in the distance, not the flag, that is in the direction you need to swing based off wind and other factors. Following that line back to you, find something on the ground in front of you to focus on for the low. Doing this takes your focus off the flag since it is not usually the target you are aiming for directly.

Remember to breathe. In the heat of the moment, setting up the perfect shot, remember to take some deep breaths. Many players hold their breath while aiming, which causes them to tense up and can hinder the swing. A few deep breaths will remind you to relax, and keep your movements smooth and supple.

Many players will test their foot alignment with a club across the toe line, however, the best judge is to place the club at the heels. Many golfers flare either their left or right toe depending on their favored hand. This flared toe line affects your shot alignment and is not accurate. The heels maintain alignment even if the toes are flared so use them as your guide to check your stance.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that you do what you do in practice on the course. This is critical because good practice will result in good play an vice versa. If you fool around during practice then you will only hurt your form.

Don’t go out and buy every possible type of wedge without truly understanding the difference between them. Unless you are a very skilled golfer, it is unlikely that you will recognize the difference in loft between a gap wedge and a lob wedge. Save yourself both time and money and stick with a pitching wedge and sand wedge until you truly start to get a feel for your wedges.

As you can see, it is not as expensive as you thought to get your golf game to another level and start playing better right now. Apply the tips you found in the above article and your friends might wonder if you hired that expensive pro after all! Shh, it will be your little secret.

5 Golf Facts That Will Change Your Game

April 6, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

Have you seen your golfing handicap decrease in spite of (or sometimes because) of the hard work you put into improving your game? Or maybe you’re tired after a long round of 18 holes where every drive seems to fall short. Do you tend to miss putts due to utter frustration over missing the last one? If you are plagued with problems like these then it is time to give your golf game a boost. The five aspects of golfing you need to work on are your flexibility, strength, endurance, nutrition, and mental toughness, and here’s some interesting information on each of them.

About Flexibility

Is your golfing swing awkward due to the fact that you may be rushing things too much and being too eager-beaver in your actions? Be proactive when getting your muscles ready for the game – don’t wait till the last minute to stretch. Avoid that stiff and awkward feeling with regular stretching. This way you become more flexible and graceful with your swing. Before you know it you’ll be seeing significant improvement in your swing.

Improving Strength

When exercising away from the golf course, is strength training part of your routine? A lot of golfers make the mistake of hitting the ball as hard as they could when swinging their club. There are several adverse side effects of doing this. Your muscles may not be physically prepared for the intense strain and you may become injured. But with strength training, you could swing harder and more naturally, avoiding injuries and improving your game.

Are you wanting to take a rest in the golf cart after just a few holes? If so, then focus on your endurance. Golf may not immediately look like a sport that requires a high amount of fitness and endurance. Here’s an interesting fact – an 18-hole course could spread out about five miles, which is a lot of walking. Add some cardiovascular exercises to your routine, no more than 45 minutes a day will be fine.

Your body needs the proper fuel to work efficiently. Common sense dictates that loading up on junk food is a bad idea. So what exactly should you eat? An optimal sports nutrition menu plan will include high quality carbohydrates, lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and plenty of water.

Keep Your Mind On The Game With Mental Toughness

Do you get bothered at the second hole thinking about that botched drive on the first hole? You’re effectively killing your golf game this way by letting one bad thing lead to another. Before swinging that golf ball, try thinking some positive thoughts instead. And that includes not being discouraged over goof-ups on the previous holes. Think of a good shot instead of fearing you might miss the next shot as well.

If you wish to improve your golf game, take note of these five tips. It will take some time to make these activities a habit, but will be well worth the effort.

Why It’s Important For Children To Play Sport

April 5, 2012 · Posted in Family · Comment

Children of today spend a lot of time in front of what our parents used to call the idiot box when we were younger – the television, and if not that, maybe a computer. It isn’t like when we were growing up when there was always a baseball game to be played – it’s time to take our kids away from their electronic comforts! Maybe it’s time to get them into some kind of sport or physical activity and show them it could be fun.

Look around you – today’s children are getting fatter and fatter, and without the benefit of physical activity, you’d be seeing your children turn into Tom Arnold rather than Tom Seaver. In all seriousness, this is a very unhealthy trend that could give your children health problems as adults, and start them off on a path of procrastination when it comes to staying fit. Exercise can also keep them in good mental shape, and could serve as a good bonding activity for the family.

Exercise does not have to be rigorous training in a gym, and with small children, fun games outdoors are more likely to interest them. Playing tag or hide-and-go-seek can amuse young children, or you can get them started on the fundamentals of baseball or basketball. You don’t need fancy equipment to play these games either.

If you live in an apartment, take your children for a walk in the park. Even a walk round the local zoo will give you all a good workout. Swimming is a good family activity that you can teach to your children. Or teach them how to ride a bike and take the entire family cycling – that too can be fun. And in the winter time, you can take the entire family ice skating, though you and the spouse may want to leave the kids ice skating by themselves once they come of age. Some physical activity definitely beats none at all!

Teamwork and the different rules in team sports may be difficult for younger children to learn, so it isn’t a wise idea to get them started too early. Some peewee leagues will offer training in basic skills, using fun activities to teach young children the basic moves they will use in sport when they get older. Children also learn things that they can use outside of the sporting world, such as teamwork, sharing things (in this case, equipment) and waiting for their turn.

If you lead by example, you have a better chance of teaching your children to follow your lead and engage in physical activity. Instead of just letting them play their video games, encourage them to play sports and join peewee or youth league teams, and to continue playing sports even during vacation. There is only one way you can convince your children to stay healthy, and that is through exercise.

5 Quick Golf Tips To Drop 5 Golf Strokes Next Round

April 1, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

All golfers want to get around the course in less strokes. Of course, that is easier said than done! Many times, the same tendencies rear their ugly head on the course for us, and we end up shooting the same high score each round. Here are 5 simple methods to utilize to drop 5 shots off your handicap this season.

One thing that consistently plagues golfers and increases their scores is too many putts. Being able to get lag putts closer will minimize three putts on the course. 3 putts almost always lead to being over par on the hole. A simple tip to try is while warming up for a round, make sure you hit many long putts to begin with to get the feel of lagging well that day.

Managing the course is a skill that all good golfers have. Hitting driver too much is a tendency that many amateur golfers have. Next round, calculate the distance to the widest part of the fairway and hit the corresponding club. This might not be a driver! This will, however, lower your scores every time.

Hitting those short putts is a key to lower scores for each and every round. Pros and lower handicapped golfers hit a larger percentage of those 3, 4 and 5 footers. How do they do this? Simple. They practice! Try hitting 3 putts in a row from 3 feet, before moving back to 4 feet, then 5 feet. Your next score is sure to be much lower. You’ll hit those crucial bogey, par, and birdie putts, which can only lower your handicap this year.

The more distance control you can have with your wedges, the lower scores will be. Practice hitting your shots with wedges to exact distances on the range. This might mean you’ll have to pace off and mark some yardages. The more consistent your distance control can be, the shorter the putts are going to be left for you to score on the hole.

Taking your medicine and deciding not to play too aggressive can be a good thing that can lead to lower scores. Take stock of your game. Do you usually try to hit over a certain lake that ruins your score every time? How about trying to hit over trouble with a long iron or wood? Try a few rounds of just laying up and taking high numbers out of play to lower your scores this season. Leave the ego at home and go for the lower score!

Try these 5 simple methods and you’ll be sure to drop 5 shots from your handicap this golf season. Have more fun this year with a better golf game!

Want To Make Your Golf Game Better?

March 28, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

Golf is one of those addictive games that can be amazingly fun or intensely frustrating. Once you’ve managed to master the game it will become a lot more fun but the day-to-day grind of learning the game can seem slow going. However, there’s no need to despair, as there are many things you can do to improve your game so don’t give up on golf just yet.

Making sure you have the proper gear is the first step to becoming a “real” golfer. This means everything from balls to the proper attire. There are two main types of balls that you should be interested in, and those are two-piece balls and three-piece balls. Beginners generally start with two-piece balls with three-piece balls mainly recommended for more advanced golfers who have better control. First you need to master the game before moving on to a more complex type of ball. The important thing to keep in mind when it comes to proper golf attire is that it shouldn’t interfere with the range of motion required to properly swing. If you’re wearing a tight jacket, you won’t be able to swing far enough for those long shots you love to watch on television.

Balance is the most important element of a good swing. After all, you’ll find it a bit hard to hit the ball if you keep falling over. On the other hand, once you master the art of pivoting around a single point, you will find that the club head will strike the ball every time. This important pivot point is located just below the point where your collarbone meets the base of your neck; three inches below it to be exact. So, this is the point that should always stay fixed, while your body pivots around it. If you are having trouble maintaining balance there are many golf exercises that will help correct that. Strength and flexibility are also important to develop so you should find exercises to build those for the sake of your swing too.

Practice makes perfect – this applies to golf also. The more time you spend practicing the better your game will be. Consider spending a little time with a golf pro to find out if you have any bad habits or major weaknesses that need to be corrected. In the end, without the assistance of a golf pro you could spend hours practicing and perfecting bad habits. Don’t hyper-focus on the numbers and try to enjoy the game instead. You don’t want to put too much pressure on yourself so that you wind up hating the game. Pros in the game don’t get where they are without endless hours of daily practice.

Clearly, there are many factors involved in playing a great golf game but with a solid foundation and plenty of practice, you too can play golf like the pros. Just focus on the game and what you want to achieve, and you will soon be the envy of the golf course!

Take Your Vertical Leap Workout to the Next Level: 4 Exercises

December 29, 2011 · Posted in Sports · Comment

There’s plenty of ways to tackle any life goal. Such is the case in making true gains in your vertical leap workout: you have choices aplenty. One thing you can’t do is avoid the effort and dedication it will take. Here are 4 great exercises to make serious gains in your vertical jump.

1. Do Lunges

Nobody “loves” lunges, but that’s alright. We hate lots of things we need, like going to the dentist. This can hardly be matched for efficiency, however, especially in a vertical leap workout. You’ll include your calves, glutes, quads and hams in this one.

Begin the exercise with dumbbells in hand, with a comfortable grip and enough weight to exert yourself. Like the title says, lunge, without bending at the waist, and you’ll end the movement with your upper leg parallel with the ground. Either lunge forward again (unless you’ll hit the wall!), or step back and take your next step with the other leg.

2. Classic: Squats

This is another long time favorite-or not-to workout most of your leg muscles. Of course, being classic for a reason, this will work out your legs with serious efficiency. To protect your spinal health and safety, you have to commit to proper form while squatting.

Unlike the lunge, squats are performed with the barbell traditionally (you can use dumbbells if you want, but you’ll look like a pansy). Rest the bar across the top of your back, with as much weight as you can safely stand. Usually squat weights are much heavier than bench weights. Keep your chest out, back straight, abs tight, then lower until your quads are parallel to the floor. Don’t bend your back! Slowly rise back up standing, then repeat.

3. What else: Calf Raises!

No vertical leap workout would be complete without a calf raise. Big, bad calves means serious vertical. You have the option to use a stair case and simply hang off the stair with your toes pointing at the staircase, then raise yourself to your tip toes, then repeat. You can also use weights to do this, or use the barbell at the squat rack and rise up onto your toes, or use the hack squat machine and just extend your legs until almost locked and push off with your toes.

4. Kick it up a notch: Step Ups

Lastly, you can perform the step up in your vertical leap workout. Take the free weight selection of your choice in hand. Find yourself something that can withstand the added weight, like a weight bench, just so long as it’s about 2 feet off the ground. Step up with your leading foot and raise your other leg until your knee hits your chest. Then, repeat the motion for the other leg. By “leading foot,” by the way, is simply meant whichever foot you normally take your first step with. This will build up quads and calves-your target muscles for vertical jumping.
