When a loved one moves into an assisted living facility, it’s nice to know a little bit about the staff that will be providing the services. Each and every day, these are the people who will be interacting with your loved one. Their competence, attitude and demeanor can set the tone for the entire facility. Nothing could be more important than to have a quality staff in the assisted living facility you select.

The following are positions that many assisted living facilities have: director of nursing, medicine technicians, caregivers, activities director and activities leader, receptionist, accountant, housekeepers, maintenance personnel, wait staff, cooks, dining service staff, marketing staff, and executive director. The ultimate responsibility of seeing that the facility meets the needs of its residents and the state requirements belongs to the executive director.

The competence of the staff member is essential. Are they prepared for their position? Each state has different laws governing assisted living. For specific information, you will need to go to the state website to determine the level of training required.

Each person must be trained for the position they hold. When you tour a facility, you might ask about the training that the employees receive. Some of the areas that are common to all positions include emergency evacuation training, how to respond in an emergency, how to treat residents with consideration and respect.

A good quality shared by most employees at assisted living is a genuine affection for seniors. If they don’t, it will show to both the residents and the guests sooner or later. In my experience, the only staff that doesn’t usually interact with the resident are those who wash dishes and clean the kitchen. Employees in all other positions have the opportunity to interact with residents on a daily basis.

Patience is a valued resource for a staff member. The staff learns quickly, that it is sometimes necessary to repeat themselves as many seniors suffer from early dementia. Even those seniors with dementia are aware when a staff member is being impatient with them.

Attention to detail is a requirement for many of the positions. A medicine technician, for example, has a very detailed job being responsible for overseeing many prescription and over the counter medications. In most cases, they also remind the resident to take the medications as prescribed by their doctor. Even a small mistake on their part could have dire consequences.

A knowledge of the residents’ capabilities is essential for the person that plans the activities. Seniors should be engaged with outings, games, entertainment and other activities that are appropriate for their abilities. Often the activities include involvement with the local community.

An essential ingredient for any staff member is a genuine desire to help seniors. Working in the senior care business has a lot of rewards, but only for a person who truly enjoys helping others. There are some, however, who end up working in assisted living when they were looking for just any job. A genuine desire to help seniors and an understanding of the aging process is essential to ensure that the employee enjoys their job and maintains a good attitude.
