How will London cope during the 2012 Olympic games?

July 13, 2012 · Posted in Sports · Comment

Twelve Million Transport journeys are made every day in London. The transport infrastructure of this historic city has underground a major over haul to make those journeys as quick and easy as possible for Londoners and visitors.

Hosting the Olympic games presents the host country with a big challenge and London in 2012 is no exception. Over 6 billion has been spent in an attempt to bring the infrastructure up to a standard where it will cope. Has this been enough? It will become apparent at the end of July 2012.

With the aim of making sure that people are able to get around London as quickly and efficiently as possible during the games, there has been a massive effort in the run up to the games to organise things. Public transport is expected to play a key role in moving people around the city.

2012 will be London’s third Olympic Games. The transport system has come a long way since 1948.

The tube (London’s metro) has been moving people around the city since 1863 and is the oldest system of its kind in the world.

With all the aforementioned upgrades complete, underground users are already benefiting. Stratford, East London, the principal hub of the games, is now one of the best connected stations in the UK. The underground service will run later and more frequently across London for the duration of the games. All spectators attending the game will receive a free all zones travel card for the day of their event.

In addition to upgrades to the tube system, there have been upgrades to the bus services too. Even with all these upgrades and all the money invested the best way to get around may still be on foot or pedal power, depending on the length of your journey (and the weather!).

If you are coming to London for the Olympics then there is a wide variety of accommodation available. However with the influx of visitors it could be difficult to get your first choice if you don’t act quickly.

Of course, this is the third time that London hosts the Olympics, and London is a city that can offer high standards for its visitors. This third occasion will make London the only city in the world that has hosted the Olympics 3 times. The first was in 1908, second in 1948. The lawns of Wimbledon will be the venue for Olympic tennis, central London will host archery, road cycling, beach volleyball.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to come to London and they will all need a place to stay. New hotels are already opening in London, with this opportunity they’ve created new places for people that need a job in this area, as a chef, bellboy, or any other job in this area. From campsites to castles, the UK offers a wide variety of accommodation for people with tickets to events at their venues in Coventry, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Cardiff and many other cities, plus Weymouth and Portland.

London should be able to cope with all the extra visitors, it is already one of the most popular international city destinations in the world.

Planning a visit to London for the Olympics? Why not take a trip up the road and find out what Cambridge has to offer as well?

Early retirement for digital nomads

July 9, 2012 · Posted in Health · Comment

The concept of an early retirement before the age of 65 is nothing more than pipe dream for most people. They would never even consider it to be a reality given the fact that it’s just not the way things are done…at least not traditionally. The traditional way is to graduate high school and then spend your entire adult life working for someone else’s benefit, working your way up a corporate ladder rung by rung over 40 years of your life, paying off school loans, car loans and a mortgage payment. The cold facts are that most adults in the U.S. won’t see retirement until after 65 years of age because that’s the way the system is designed to work.

But in the 21st century there are more and more intelligent entrepreneurs waking up to the fact that you not only don’t have to wait until you are 65+ to retire…but that you can do it for a lot less than the $500,000 that most people think you need to have in the bank to cover your cost of living for the rest of your life. In fact, if you trade the life of suburbia in for one of international travel as an expat you could find yourself retiring on as little as $35,000.

It sounds like a myth to most people, but it’s a reality that more and more expats are choosing to explore every year. A perfect example of such a place is Bulgaria, which joined the European Union in 2008. A quiet country on the eastern borders of Europe, the country has a low cost of living coupled with a rising medical tourism industry, several major cities and thousands of years of culture and history behind her. And while most Americans look at the country as something inferior, the reality is that Bulgaria is one of dozens of places you can choose for your early retirement.

The cost of living, for example, is a mere $8,000 a year on the high end if you want to enjoy an upper middle class lifestyle as an expat. That’s a total cost of living that includes your entertainment. And considering you can pick up a house, condo or apartment for around $35,000 to $50,000 in any of the major cities, you can easily have your home completely paid for after working just a few short years while utilizing your Western salary of $35,000 or more per year against a cost of living that is less than $10,000. If you saved $25,000 per year for a mere two years you could have your house completely paid for…without the 40+ years of mortgage payments.

This is the reality of the expat lifestyle, and it’s one that is chosen in preference to a life that is controlled by a government who wants you to stay at home and bury yourself in $300,000 of debt. But in the modern era when you can travel the world and choose to retire early in any country that you want, simply by living as an expat, you can see yourself to an early retirement on a lot less than $500,000.

If you have ever wanted to travel full time, there’s no time like the present. There are millions of others just like you from all around the world looking to explore the planet just like you.

Early Retirement While Living Abroad

July 9, 2012 · Posted in Travel · Comment

When presented with the raw numbers of the expat lifestyle, most people shake their head in disbelief. They think it just isn’t possible to have the same standard of living and amenities as back in the United States for a mere $8,000 to $10,000 per year, but the reality is that it is very much the truth. In fact, it is the primary reason most travelers are choosing to have a base of operations outside of the U.S. As of 2010, the median cost of living (according to the U.S. Census Bureau) for a single, working adult is around $25,000 per year. When you compare 25k to 8k-10k per year, the numbers don’t lie. That extra money could be yours for an early retirement…so long as you are willing to take it.

The median wage (again, according to the U.S. Census Bureau) as of 2010 was the same: $25,000 per year. That is take-home pay, after taxes. The pre-tax number is just above $36,000 dollars. But the other benefit most people don’t know about is the fact that when you live abroad as an independent expat you don’t have to pay the same tax rates that you do while living in the United States. Choosing a country that has a tax treaty with the U.S. means you can pay the local rate of taxes in your chosen country rather than the higher rate back home, effectively allowing you to retain even more of your salary and thus obtain an early retirement.

Most countries outside of the industrialized West still have all of the same amenities and luxuries that people in the “first world” countries have, but the cost of living is significantly lower. As a general rule, places like Colombia, Bulgaria, Mexico, Italy, Greece and beyond hover between the $8,000 and $10,000 range, which means you can head there as an expat with your pre-tax salary of $36,000 per year and live accordingly. What this means for the savvy digital nomad is that you can put a significant portion of your income back in your pocket rather than merely breaking even year after year as you would back home.

The beautiful thing about the expat lifestyle is that you don’t have to be part of the current work force to take advantage of the lowered cost of living in other countries. Pensioners have been choosing to retire overseas for years, and this is one of the primary reasons. You can take your $1,000 a month pension (or rough equivalent) and use it in a place like Cancun, Mexico where you can live on $600 per month, leaving you with $400 per month to spend as you see fit. And because the healthcare is free you don’t have to spend hundreds of thousands on medical fees, plus you have access to the beach and a lush, tropical environment to enjoy every day of the week.

Living abroad as an expat means you can reduce your working hours if you choose, because you need significantly less to pay for your cost of living. Or you can do as many other professionals are doing, which is working abroad for three to five years, working normal hours on your old salary and keeping that money so you can enjoy an early retirement by the time you are 30 or 35, rather than waiting until you are 60 or 65. When you can buy three bedroom house in a place like Italy for $35,000, it’s easy to save up in a few short years and retire comfortably at an early age.

If you have ever questioned traveling full time, there’s no time like the present to get your start. The reduced cost of living is one of the least important reasons.

The Freedom of Expat Living

July 1, 2012 · Posted in Business · Comment

One of the primary reasons that the expat lifestyle is so important to so many people is the simple fact that you can control your life to a greater extent than you ever could while living back in the United States or the United Kingdom. Many people take for granted the fact that the so-called freedoms you have while living in Western countries come at a cost, and that costs continue to rise every year to the point where the land of the free is anything but.

Perhaps the easiest comparison to make for the uninitiated is between Mexico City and New York City. These two cities are both considered leaders in the global community in terms of population, banking, commerce and education. The cost of living in New York City is around $50,000 for bottom of the barrel living, but if you compare it to Mexico City you can have the exact same creature comforts and style of life for only $10,000 a year.

Think about the difference between these two cities for just a minute. Then reflect upon the fact that $40,000 is a lot of money to the average American, and when you consider the fact that these two cities are exactly the same on paper, you come up with a basic mathematical fact that even a child can understand. It is this reason that expats are choosing to leverage the power of cities around the world, because if a child can understand it, it’s a simple enough mathematical fact that adults don’t even need to think about.

This is what expat living is all about, and it is this reason that more and more people every year are choosing to live outside of Western countries rather than be held down by a prohibitive cost of living. When you can put tens of thousands of dollars a year back into your bank account, all while retaining the exact same amenities and style of living you had back home, there is absolutely no reason to stay in the U.S. or the U.K. when that freedom robs you of your bank account to the point where you are absolutely broke.

When you can put the vast majority of your income back into your bank account every year rather than spend it on the basic amenities that you need to survive, you can control your life to a greater degree than most people would have ever thought possible. There is no reason to spend 40 years of your life as a wage slave in a country that only allows you to put a few hundred dollars per month in your bank account, especially when you can have absolute freedom living in other countries where you can be retired long before your geriatric years.

You can choose the life of a location independent expat over one of suburbia, choosing to live in Mexico or other countries around the world to enjoy an early retirement.

Living beyond the numbers of the expat lifestyle

July 1, 2012 · Posted in Travel · Comment

Wealth management means different things to different people, as does retirement. For some, it is IRAs and bank-manged stocks or funds. These are common types of investments. And for the vast majority of people whose life is restricted to suburbia, international investments, tax havens and offshore accounts are nothing but words. The thought of being able to make international business deals alongside multi-million dollar corporations seems like a joke.

The reality is that so long as you don’t mind doing a little bit of travel you can enjoy the same benefits. The 21st century has allowed more and more people around the world to access and research international investments via the Internet. As the visibility increases more and more expats around the world are choosing to make international travel and investment their priority rather than leaving their money in banks back home. All of this is to access something average people have a hard time comprehending: early retirement.

Although it might sound like a fantasy at first, the reality is that retiring early is something that anyone can do. The U.S. is continuing to see costs that are three and four times more than most of the rest of the world, which means the average individual has a salary that can’t even cover their basic costs. The only choice is to start borrowing money from the bank and credit card companies to pay the bills, which means instead of saving money you are actually sinking further and further into debt.

This is where the expat lifestyle shines. Expats are entrepreneurs on a global level because they have the flexibility to go anywhere in the world that they want and invest in whatever they want. This is because they aren’t trusting in a failed government or bank to secure their future. Instead, they are looking at places like Chile or Brazil or Singapore where the economies are booming and universal healthcare cuts your cost of living down to almost nothing. On top of that, the cost of living is dramatically cheaper and there are plenty of jobs.

It’s so simple that even a child can understand the numbers. The average, ordinary salary of 25k a year after taxes in the U.S. will only cover your bare-bones basics, but in a country like Mexico where you only need 15k a year for an upper middle class life and suddenly you can start putting 15k a year back in your savings. Plus, whereas a house in the U.S. costs 225k for a 3-bedroom place, you can pick one up in countries like Chile for around 35 to 50k. It’s these types of numbers that allow expats the early retirement most people only dream of.

What’s truly mind-boggling is that all of this is possible on just a median salary. Imagine the types of results you can see when your salary is 50k, 100k and 250k and beyond per year. The more money you make per year the more options you have because your costs are almost nothing. Plus, with medical tourism you can access universal healthcare along with a higher level of control over your income. This allows you to make intelligent living decisions rather than only making it paycheck to paycheck. Once you realize the simplicity of the expat lifestyle you can quickly see that you can retire long before you are 65 years of age.

Each day, more and more expats are choosing to live a life abroad rather than stay at home. That’s because you can achieve more by living a life of absolute freedom than you ever could as one of the countless wage slaves working their lives away back home.

Things To Learn Before Renting Holiday Villas In Lanzarote

May 18, 2012 · Posted in Travel · Comment

Renting holiday villas has become the choice for groups of friends and families going on vacation since it IS cheaper than renting several hotel rooms. This preference has become most evident in popular tourist destinations like Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Hundreds of holiday villas – in various shapes and sizes – are available in the island, waiting for their next happy occupants. Although holiday villas in Lanzarote are plentiful, there are still a few things you should check before renting one of them.

The first thing you need to check is the proximity of the villa you’re considering to the other villas nearby. If you want to remain secluded, choose a villa that is situated a little far away from the rest of the villas on the street. Before you finalize your plans, ask the travel agent if he’s got a map showing where the villas are located and choose one that suits you.

You also need to check how far away the holiday villa is to the nearest town. This is important because you need to shop for essentials before or after you’ve settled in the villa. You also need to find out whether it would be difficult for you to get to town should there be an emergency. But if the holiday villas in Playa Blanca Lanzarote you’re considering to rent are near enough to the town, you can go easy on the groceries or food since you can go out and eat in restaurants or bars in town, otherwise, it would be better to buy food and supplies to last for your entire stay.

You also need to check if there are transportation options available to you in the area. In the case of Lanzarote, tourists rent cars they use to go sightseeing with. If you rent a car, choose models that are equipped with satellite navigation or GPS so you can avoid getting lost.

You should also take time to learn or find out what local traditions and languages are spoken and followed on the island. Learning the local language makes going around the island and shopping for souvenirs very easy while learning about traditions followed can make your vacation more meaningful.

The appliances available in the holiday villas to rent in Lanzarote you’re considering is to check what appliances are available. There are holiday villas that come with complete appliances as well as cooking and dining utensils and there are some that doesn’t. You need to understand however, that the holiday villas that come with complete appliances cost more so you have to check your budget before you rent one.

Make Sure You Have No Travel Woes When You Follow These Tips

April 22, 2012 · Posted in Entertainment · Comment

Everyone has that feeling when they are about to walk out the door, or sitting on a plane 10,000 feet above ground; did I leave the oven on? While traveling is a fun and relaxing experience, it also has its own myriad of stresses that we hope the following information will help you sort through and prepare for your next big trip.

If vacationing in an area you’ve never visited before, try to find a local to give you some information about the area. Major tourist attractions are always well marked and you’ll have no problem finding them, but learning about some local favorites can make your trip much more memorable and personalized.

If you are traveling to a foreign country, you should make it a point to order some smaller denominations of the foreign currency. By sticking with small amounts, you are less likely to fall victim to unscrupulous vendors, and these amounts are perfect for use as cab fare, tips, and cold beverages.

To fight jet lag, if you arrive at your destination before 1:00 PM in that country, take a nap for no longer than three hours. However, when you arrive, and the local time is later than 1:00 PM, try to stay awake as long as possible and go to bed no earlier than 7:00 PM. This is the best way to adapt to the current time zone and avoid jet lag.

Before you go on a trip, ask around for tips from friends and family. See who has been there before and/or what they’d recommend you either visit or avoid. Are there particular restaurants, sights, or shows you should see? You can also check out sites on the internet that provide advice from fellow travelers.

To boost your chances of getting an upgrade on your hotel room or flight seat, let clerks know about any special occasions. If you’re a newlywed, a new graduate, or even just celebrating a birthday, staff will be more likely to offer you any upgrades they have available. Be sure to be enthusiastic when letting them know so that they’ll want to help you celebrate.

Bring back toiletries from the hotels that you stay at while traveling. Things like soap, shampoo and lotion can be some of the best souvenirs of your vacation, and they are completely free. Since your room rate includes the cost of these items, don’t feel bad for taking them home with you. Use them to remember the great time you had while you were away.

Traveling light can be a wonderful experience, especially for single people or a couple. If you are capable of travel with just one bag, you will have much more flexibility on your trip and will be able to explore a great deal more. Europe is the perfect place for this travel style.

If you are going on a car trip, be sure your cell phone is charged up and keep it in the car with you. Don’t make the mistake of packing it and putting it in the trunk! If you have an emergency on the road, you will want to be able to get to your cell phone without a moment’s hesitation.

When traveling, it is important to keep all cords labeled. Having multiple cords for different things, such as, laptop and cell chargers can be hard to keep track of. Keep all of your cords clearly labeled so that you will know which cord is for which item. It can also help to make a list of the cords and the colors that go with them.

By understanding how you learn, you will provide yourself a strong heading in knowing what to look for as you search the market place for the easiest way to learn Spanish.

Ways to Learn Spanish:

There are several different routes you can take to learning Spanish and still end up at roughly the same end point. One method that many of us are familiar with is taking a college Spanish course. This method will cost you anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars depending on which institution you decide to complete the Spanish course in. There are many advantages that are associated with learning Spanish in a college course: you have access to an individual (professor) who knows everything you would every want to know about the Spanish language, you also have fellow classmates to help and encourage you throughout the learning process, and you can test your level of progression through the quizzes and exams offered by the professor. Despite these advantages, you should not expect to become fluent in any language after one course. It’s going to take multiple courses and probably years of public communication in that particular language to become fluent in that language. Due to the relatively high cost, the inappropriate timing of many Spanish classes offered at the college level, and the realization that you are most likely not to become fluent in a timely manner, many people are reverting to the “Do It Yourself Mentality”.

My definition of the “Do It Yourself Mentality” – buying a Spanish educational book and teaching yourself the material without the aid of a professor or other teaching source.

There are many benefits to learning Spanish through the Do It Yourself Mentality: First, you will save yourself the extra money that would have been spent on Spanish college courses. Secondly, you will be able to set your own learning pace. And Thirdly, you don’t have to limit yourself to the inappropriate timing of many Spanish courses offered in college institutions. Despite these great advantages, you are still limiting your ability to learn Spanish. For instance, one of the biggest problems individuals face in learning Spanish is learning how to correctly pronounce each letter in the alphabet. These letters do not have the same pronunciation as the letters in the English alphabet. Some of these letters can actually be a little tricky to pronounce if you’re not careful. Basically, you run the rick of learning Spanish in the wrong way. It would be a shame to put all of the time and effort into learning Spanish only to find out that you learned the language incorrectly. Don’t let this keep you from pursuing your desire to learn Spanish. There is another method that combines the strengths of all the advantages listed above. So yes, you’ve guessed it! The easiest way to learn Spanish is through a Spanish teaching software.

There are a lot of Spanish teaching software’s on the market today. Trying to pick apart each one based on it’s benefits and downfalls may seem like a daunting task. Fortunately, there are a lot of really good reviews that break down each software into it’s pro’s and con’s. But before you start to do that you need to know what to look for in the learning Spanish software. For instance: How does the software teach? Is it beneficial to the way I learn? Can I afford the software?

All of these are questions that you need to ask yourself before you even start looking for a Spanish teaching software. If you don’t figure out this information beforehand then you will probably get caught up in all the marketing hype. So stay strong, know what you’re looking for. You will find what you want and need to help you learn Spanish.

How You Learn and What Your Learning Strengths Are:

Each and every person is different. Some people are visual learners, while others are audio learners. You need to ask yourself how do I learn? This may seem kind of redundant but it’s crucial if you intend on finding a teaching software that will really help you learn Spanish. Think back to your workday or to any particular thing you experienced this week and ask yourself what was different about that moment that allowed me to remember that experience? Or what did I remember most about that experience? Was it a visual presentation such as power point? Or was it a presentation give by a speaker? Perhaps you recall a conference call more clearly or the details in a printout? What ever you remember from this past week is a clue to how you learn. Also, don’t limit yourself. You may learn through a combination of methods, such as audio, visual, and social interaction. By taking the time to understand how you learn and what your learning strengths are you will be increasing your chances of successfully learning Spanish. Basically, helping yourself find the easiest way to learn Spanish.

The easiest way to learn Spanish is through a Spanish teaching software. With a Spanish teaching software you can move forward at your own rate. You have the aid of Spanish tutors and support staff. There are always exceptions but you’ll find that people who home exchange often are more comfortable doing it with a party whose standard of living is much the same. Think about singles and families, and you’ll realize that there could be major differences as well as preferences and habits. If you have children, and you exchange homes with a family who also has kids, there will be toys around for your kids to play with. People are also generally more comfortable in homes that are fairly close to their own in terms of standard of living. It’s just that two people from two entirely dissimilar backgrounds, and homes will usually not feel 100% happy in the other person’s home. However, it also makes sense that sometimes people want a change, and therefore may be open to something totally different. But in the end what you’ll do anyway is choose and inquire only with those places you’re interested in, and others will do the same.

Many people enjoy home exchange programs because the experience of staying in someone’s home can be much more comfortable than staying in a hotel. While hotels offer all sorts of luxuries, they never feel like home, and there is always a certain institutional atmosphere. Opting to vacation in someone else’s home can make you feel more like a resident in the locale you are visiting, rather than an actual visitor. You will have several of the same satisfactions of your own home, such as a kitchen, household appliances and often times Internet access. With some arrangements, you can even use the home owner’s car. Home exchanges let you explore your new surroundings from a more comfortable position than from an impersonal hotel.

While a lot of people utilize house swaps as a means of taking a pleasurable and low cost getaway, it can also be utilized as a means for getting to know an unfamiliar area that you might be thinking of relocating to. By doing a home exchange, you are choosing a great path for getting to know a new locale than to overnight it in a hotel or a bed and breakfast. When you stay in another person’s home, you can get an actual idea of how it feels to live there, as opposed to being a tourist and booking a room in a hotel or at a resort. You will be in a neighborhood, and the person whose home it is can provide you with valuable information about the area. If you really enjoy the area, you can consider taking a look at some of the homes on the market while you are there. House swapping is a great way to visit a place and see it the way the local people do.

For those who like home exchange arrangements, there are great benefits such as saving on hotel bills plus you can make new friends from all over. You can expand your circle of contacts and friends to a truly global scale. The best way to find out how you like it is to give it a try. In addition to our house swap exchange tips, you can talk to agencies and possibly other people who have done it.
